Your Wix or Squarespace site isn't ranking. Here's why that isn't going to change.
You built a website, or paid someone to build one on Wix or Squarespace. You expected it to bring in customers. It hasn't - or not nearly enough. That is not bad luck and it is not because your business isn't good enough. It is because both platforms are structurally slow, and Google ranks fast sites above slow ones. Every day your site sits at the bottom of search results, a competitor with a faster site is getting the enquiries you should be getting.
Why Wix and Squarespace sites struggle to rank on Google
It is not a settings problem. It is not something you can fix by tweaking SEO fields or upgrading your plan. It is built into how the platforms work - and Wix's own engineers have not been able to solve it.
They load enormous amounts of JavaScript before your content appears
Wix loads hundreds of kilobytes of JavaScript just to display a basic page. Your actual content - the words, images, and services a visitor came to see - sits behind all of that loading. Google measures how quickly your main content appears on screen (Largest Contentful Paint). Wix consistently fails this test. A hand-coded site written by a web developer sends only what the page needs - nothing more.
They load the same bloated code on every page
Wix and Squarespace load their entire editor framework, drag-and-drop engine, and app infrastructure on every page visit - whether the visitor needs it or not. On mobile, where over 60% of local searches happen, this is the difference between a site that loads in 1 second and one that takes 5. Most people leave before it finishes.
Google's ranking algorithm penalises slow sites
Core Web Vitals - Google's set of speed and user experience measurements - are a confirmed ranking factor. A site that fails Core Web Vitals is pushed down in search results in favour of faster competitors. Most Wix and Squarespace sites fail. Most hand-coded sites built by a professional web designer pass comfortably. The difference is visible in where you appear when someone in your area searches for what you do.
You cannot fix it from inside the platform
This is not a configuration issue. Wix's own engineering team has acknowledged the performance problem and has not solved it after years of trying - it is architectural. Buying a premium Wix plan does not fix it. Paying for a Wix SEO app does not fix it. Installing a Squarespace performance plugin does not fix it. The only fix is a website built differently from the ground up.
The monthly fee is not the expensive part
Wix costs less per month than a hand-coded site. That is true. But the monthly fee is not the cost that matters. The cost that matters is every enquiry that went to a competitor because their site ranked and yours did not.
- Cheap monthly fee, but no customers from search
- Lighthouse score 35-55 on mobile
- Fails Google's Core Web Vitals
- Page 2 or 3 of Google while competitors rank above you
- You own nothing - platform can change pricing any time
- Looks like thousands of other Wix sites
- Support via ticket system, no one who knows your site
- Limited control over technical SEO
- Setup fee from £199, then £45/month all-in
- Lighthouse score 95-100 on mobile and desktop
- Passes Core Web Vitals - built to rank
- Local SEO and structured data included as standard
- You own the code, the domain, everything
- Built specifically for your business - not a template
- Direct line to me - I built it, I know it, I answer
- 20 years of digital and SEO experience behind every build
If your Wix site is generating zero or minimal enquiries from Google, the platform fee is the least of your costs. A site that ranks and converts pays for itself. One that does not is just an ongoing expense.
From Wix to a proper site in two weeks
Your current site stays live the entire time. There is no gap, no downtime, nothing for visitors to notice until the better site goes live.
Brief and quote
Tell me about your business and what your current site is missing. I review your existing Wix or Squarespace site, identify the issues, and come back with a clear scope and fixed price.
Build
I design and build your replacement site. You get a live preview link to review before anything changes. Your Wix site stays live and unchanged throughout.
Review and approve
You review the new site and request any changes. Two rounds of revisions included. Most clients need only minor adjustments at this stage.
Switch and cancel
I handle the migration - new site goes live, domain transferred, redirects set up, Search Console updated. Once you are happy, I tell you when it is safe to cancel Wix.
A hand-coded website that actually brings in customers
Every site I build as a freelance web designer is written by hand - no page builders, no templates, no shortcuts that cost you rankings.
Showing up on Google
A site that scores 95+ on Lighthouse and passes Core Web Vitals has a structural advantage over every Wix and Squarespace site competing for the same searches. That is where the enquiries come from.
Loads in under 1.5 seconds on mobile
Most people searching for a local business are on their phone. If your site takes 5 seconds to load, most of them have already left. A hand-coded site has none of the JavaScript weight that slows Wix down.
Local SEO from day one
Structured data, Google Business Profile setup guidance, location-specific content, and Google Search Console submission are included as standard - not charged as extras. For businesses in Surrey and across the UK, this is what gets you found locally.
Built for your business, not a template
Wix sites look like Wix sites. Thousands of businesses use the same handful of templates. A hand-coded site is built around what your specific customers need to see - your services, your location, your trust signals.
You own everything outright
The code, the domain, the hosting. If you ever want to change anything or move to a different developer, everything comes with you. No lock-in, no exit fees, no proprietary platform you cannot escape.
One person who knows your site
I build it, I maintain it, I answer when something needs changing. No account managers passing messages between you and someone who has never seen your site. Based in Caterham, Surrey - working across the UK.
Why work with me over an agency?
I am a freelance web designer and developer based in Caterham, Surrey with 20 years in digital - including in-house roles at Snow & Rock, Cotswold Outdoor, and Nestlé Nescafé Dolce Gusto. I have built and managed websites from small local businesses to national e-commerce operations.
When you work with me you get someone who understands both the technical side - performance, SEO, structured data - and the commercial side. A website is not a brochure. It is a tool for generating enquiries. Every decision I make when building your replacement site is made with that in mind.
I work with small businesses across Surrey, South London, and the UK. Most of my clients come from Wix or Squarespace, or from agencies who built them something slow and expensive.
Switching - what people usually ask
Can you keep the content from my Wix or Squarespace site?
Yes. Any text, images, or copy you want to keep gets carried across. Most clients also take the opportunity to refresh the content during the build - but nothing gets lost unless you choose to drop it.
Will I lose my Google rankings when I switch?
If your Wix site is scoring 35-55 on Lighthouse, the honest answer is you probably do not have significant rankings to protect. That said, I handle all URL mapping, redirects, and Search Console resubmission properly so you do not take a step backwards during the transition.
What happens to my Wix domain?
If you bought your domain through Wix, I transfer it out to a proper registrar before we go live. Your domain name stays yours - nothing changes for visitors or email.
Will my email still work during the switch?
Yes. Email is handled separately from the website. I make sure DNS is configured correctly so email is never interrupted during the transition.
How long does the switch take?
Build and migration typically takes 2 weeks from brief to live. Your old Wix site stays live the entire time - there is no downtime and no period where you have nothing online.
Do I need to cancel Wix myself?
Once your new site is live and you are happy with it, you cancel Wix directly. I will tell you exactly when it is safe to do so. There is no rush - you can run both for a month to be sure.
How much does it cost?
Setup fees start from £199 depending on the size and complexity of your site. After launch, hosting, maintenance, and domain renewal is £45/month - that covers everything ongoing. Most Wix and Squarespace plans run £13-25/month and give you a slow site with no support. You get more for a modest difference in monthly cost, plus a site that actually ranks.
Send me your Wix or Squarespace URL
I will run your site through Google Lighthouse, tell you exactly what is hurting your rankings, and give you a clear fixed price for a replacement. No obligation - just an honest assessment from a web designer who has been doing this for 20 years.
